Once a Potter!
Sewing, knitting, painting, drawing, upholstery, I've pretty much worked through the lot. Then along came pottery and I found my utopia. I find myself experimenting with any material that I come in contact with, which is why I didn't stop with the first type of clay, I loved stoneware but porcelain, how to explain? So much fun!
So here I am now, working with different types of porcelain. Not the easiest but they have the important qualities I am looking for; white, smooth and translucent.
Glazes have also fascinated me over the years. I spent a whole year at college simply mixing and experimenting with different recipes. I was looking for a glaze that would run during firing to create a pool of glass in the bottom of bowls, then one that would produce crystals and another for translucence.
As there is an extraordinary beauty to porcelain I want a glaze to enhance the clay and not overwhelm it. So I use a transparent glaze with a hint of colour. Rare earth oxides are good for this and they produce wonderful hues.
Of course it is not in my nature to be satisfied so I now want to incorporate silver in my work.
